From Tiny Town To Big City Posted on January 12th, 2017 by

Hei!

Today we ventured to Oslo, Norway! This morning we were blessed with the opportunity to sleep in, which was much needed after the many adventures at Sorrisniva, the igloo hotel. Although majority of the students chose to take full advantage of the extra hours of sleep, others woke up to get a start to their day. We began our day with yet another delicious breakfast consisting of too many things to name. Some of these include yogurt, bread, fruit, eggs, and of course, coffee.

After breakfast, we packed our bags and headed to the airport around 10:30am. Our bags are definitely gaining weight as we continue to buy plenty of souvenirs (you’re welcome mom). It was a short bus ride to the tiny Alta airport consisting of only four gates. Once we made it to our gate (after only one of us got stopped at security…cough cough Jake), just about everyone spent their time catching up on journaling and buying snacks (because snacks are always a necessity).

From here we were off to Oslo! Many spent the flight napping, journaling, or reading. After a quick two hour flight we had landed in Oslo and were all very excited about lunch. For lunch we headed to Pepe’s Pizza where tried with the array of pizzas from the classic pepperoni to taco pizza. We left feeling satisfied and ready to take on the city of Oslo.

Tonight we all took on the town of Oslo! We walked down to the main shopping street, Karl Johansgate, to do a little shopping and exploring. While exploring, we found an outdoor ice rink along with some beautiful lights and fun shops. A few students even found a souvenir shop where they bought Norwegian sweaters of their own! Others bought gifts for family and friends back home and some even bought a little treat for themselves. Overall, it was a successful shopping adventure and first afternoon in Oslo!

After our adventures tonight, we learned the importance of finding out as much information as possible before heading out. At each hotel we make sure to…

  1. Pick up a map of the city and ask for directions. We found out today that there are some streets in Oslo that are best if avoided. Luckily, we were able to find our way around them on our trek to go shopping.
  2. Pick up a business card with the address of the hotel, then you will always have the address so you can get back safe and sound!
  3. Travel with a group of friends, especially in a city you have never been to before.

We are excited to continue exploring Oslo tomorrow!
